چکیده
Two strategies were applied to the synthesis of ZinCast-1, a nitrobenzhydrol-based caged complex that upon photolysis exhibits a nearly 400-fold difference in binding for Zn(2+).

Quantifying factors that influence metal ion release in photocaged complexes using ZinCast derivatives.
Two generations of nitrobenzhydrol-based photocages for Zn(2+) have been prepared and characterized. The first series includes the tridentate ZinCast-1 utilizes a bis-pyridin-2-ylmethyl-aniline ligand that forms a 5,5-chelate ring upon metal binding. The related photocages ZinCast-2 with a N-[2-(pyridine-2-yl)ethyl]-N-(pyridine-2-ylmethyl)aniline (5,6-chelate ring) and ZinCast-3 with a N,N-bis[...
متن کاملDisparate roles of zinc in chemical hypoxia-induced neuronal death
Accumulating evidence has provided a causative role of zinc (Zn(2+)) in neuronal death following ischemic brain injury. Using a hypoxia model of primary cultured cortical neurons with hypoxia-inducing chemicals, cobalt chloride (1 mM CoCl2), deferoxamine (3 mM DFX), and sodium azide (2 mM NaN3), we evaluated whether Zn(2+) is involved in hypoxic neuronal death. The hypoxic chemicals rapidly eli...
متن کاملInduction of mossy fiber --> Ca3 long-term potentiation requires translocation of synaptically released Zn2+.
The mammalian CNS contains an abundance of chelatable Zn(2+) sequestered in the vesicles of glutamatergic terminals. These vesicles are particularly numerous in hippocampal mossy fiber synapses of the hilar and CA3 regions. Our recent observation of frequency-dependent Zn(2+) release from mossy fiber synaptic terminals and subsequent entry into postsynaptic neurons has prompted us to investigat...
متن کاملDevelopment of a Polyfunctional Dipodal Schiff Base: An Efficient Chelator and a Potential Zinc Sensor
A novel polyfunctional dipodal ligand, L = N,N'-bis[2-[(2-hydroxy-1-naphthyl)methyleneamino]ethyl]propanediamide (DOTA2HNAP) was developed and characterized through elemental and spectral analyses. The complexation behavior of the ligand was investigated with Co2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+ metal ions by potentiometric and spectrophotometric methods in H2O-D...
متن کاملUV irradiation-induced zinc dissociation from commercial zinc oxide sunscreen and its action in human epidermal keratinocytes.
Zinc oxide (ZnO) is an active ingredient in sunscreen owing to its properties of broadly filtering the ultraviolet (UV) light spectrum and it is used to protect against the carcinogenic and photodamaging effects of solar radiation on the skin. This study investigated the dissociation of zinc (Zn(2+) ) from ZnO in commercial sunscreens under ultraviolet type B light (UVB) irradiation and assesse...
